DEEP LISTENING
Dario guided us in warming up through deep listening to our own breathing, then expanding our listening out to our surrounding space, then out to the furthest sound we could hear, and then back into our surrounding space and our own breathing. This was followed by exploring sound with our hands and feet, listening to the varying sounds of our changing steps, and to the sounds our hands could make by handling and shaking objects.
ANCIENT MUSIC
Next, we explored what kinds of sounds we could make in the room with sticks and stones, paying attention to which sounds we most enjoyed. Dario conducted our collective performance of ancient music, and then let us experiment with creating our sound symphony without his direction. He then introduced us to
“Rock Piece” by Pauline Oliveros, and we performed this piece ourselves.
WORDS AND TEXT
We were guided by Dario and Kurt in how to transform the texture of spoken words, and how to combine our ancient music compositions and our spoken words to create compelling sound and text performance pieces.
